Study Says More than Half of Georgia Auto Accidents Linked to Distracted Driving

Distracted driving

Most people understand the dangers of distracted driving. Still, they continue to engage in this risky behavior behind the wheel despite public awareness campaigns and laws enacted barring drivers’ use of phones and other handheld devices. This might be because motorists are not fully cognizant of just how many car accidents are caused by distracted drivers.

A recent study from the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety found that in 2022, distracted driving was at least partly responsible for more than half of all auto accidents within the state. Consequently, more people died in auto accidents on Georgia roads than in any year since 1994, despite significant advances in vehicle safety and technology.

According to the report, 53 percent of all drivers involved in auto accidents were confirmed or suspected of distracted driving. While distractions can take many forms—such as eating, talking to passengers, or adjusting the radio—the most significant contributor is cell phone use. The rise of smartphones has created an environment where drivers feel compelled to check messages, scroll through social media or use GPS systems while behind the wheel. Any of these activities can be deadly distractions.

To combat the dangers of distracted driving, the Hands-Free Georgia Act was enacted in 2018. This law prohibits drivers from using hand-held cell phones while driving. Under this statute, motorists violate the law when they hold their phones to talk, text or use social media while on the road. Should they choose to utilize these devices, they must use hands-free technology, such as Bluetooth or voice-activated systems, to make calls or send messages.

Despite this legislation, distracted driving continues to be a major problem. Enforcement of the law can be difficult, and many drivers still engage in risky behaviors like texting while driving or glancing at their phones for navigation. Even brief moments of inattention can lead to serious crashes. Taking your eyes off the road for just five seconds at 55 miles per hour is like driving the length of a football field blindfolded.

If you or a loved one has been injured in a car accident, it might not be immediately apparent whether the other driver’s attention was compromised by a phone or another distraction. An experienced attorney can conduct a thorough investigation to determine what caused the collision and pursue the payment you deserve through settlement negotiations or at trial.
