Do I Have to Have A Lawyer for This?
Sometimes following an initial consultation the person will ask me, “Do I have to have a lawyer to handle my divorce?” I always answer that question by telling them that the law doesn’t require that they have a lawyer, but in the end they are going to be glad they did. A divorce is a court proceeding, a lawsuit. Dealing with issues in court can be very intimidating and confusing for someone who isn’t trained as a lawyer. You will be dealing with things such as the Rules of Civil Procedure and the Rules of Evidence that, unless you are familiar with them and deal with them on a daily basis, can be like reading a foreign language.
It is important to realize that failing to follow one of these rules can mean the difference between a successful outcome, and disaster. Do you really want to take that kind of risk? Here is a link to a great article that appeared in Divorce Magazine entitled “Five Reasons to Hire a Divorce Attorney“. Take a few minutes to read it, and then give us a call and let us guide you through your divorce process.
